3 Stress-Management Tips That Would Make Oprah Happy

As an avid reader of O magazine, I have an itsy-bitsy idea what would make Oprah and her staff smile in approval.  More importantly, please see what YOU think about these three stress-management tips, and consider incorporating them in your life.

#1:  Smile, first thing in the morning

When you wake up filled with dread or short on sleep or both, this technique can be challenging.  But try it anyway, regardless.  It's simple.  It goes like this:

The order of the above is not important.  You only need to smile before you pick up your day's worries, before you do ANYTHING.  This sets the tone for the entire day.  I promise.

#2: interrupt a worry loop by observing

When you find yourself in a worry loop, STOP and observe what's going on around you.  Where are you?  Describe the room or outdoor setting where you are.  See what's beautiful around you.  What are the colors?  The shapes?  The sounds?  The smells?

If this doesn't interrupt your worry, MOVE.  Go into the next room.  Drink some water.  Put on some music.  Take a walk.  Jump up and down.  Don't be concerned, you can pick up your worries soon enough.  For now, take a break.

#3:  Laugh at yourself

Gently laughing at ourselves is different than putting ourselves down.  Instead, it's poking fun at our personalities or actions the way that comedians laugh at themselves.

What do you do that's silly?  For example, I love checking items off of my "to-do" list.  If I do something that's not on the list, I'll even go back and add it, just for the joy of checking it off.  Ridiculous!

What about you?
